Knowing and the Unknown: An Existential Epistemology in a Postmodern Context

2009 •

Louis Hoffman

Existential psychology and postmodern thought share skepticism about the ability of human beings to grasp objective truth, if it even exists. However, there are also important distinctions between postmodern and existential ways of knowing. This article provides a critical comparison of postmodern and existential epistemologies, with particular focus on how a dialogue between these viewpoints can strengthen both perspectives. Particular attention is given to the existential givens, which represent universal struggles without providing any claims of universal answers, that is, objective truth. The paper concludes discussion how a postmodern existential epistemology could provide an ideal framework for psychotherapy integration.

Web content Recommendation using Machine Learning on user Mouse Tracking Data

Sparsh Gupta

The websites are becoming more and more dynamic but not intelligent. Based on certain mouse clicks or user choices, today’s dynamic websites can mold themselves but cannot predict relevant data intelligently. The data contained in today’s websites is growing and the number of users demanding unique different information is also ever increasing. This has created a challenging problem of delivering the right content to every user. This thesis is an original work concentrating on solving this problem of generating relevant content for each individual user. One of the primary inputs used by the project is the mouse movement behavior of the user. If the website capturing mouse movements is built in such a way that the mouse pointer is mostly close to the point of gaze of the user, then the mouse movement behavior would theoretically mean tracking the eye of the user. Based on this mouse movement data, further content can be predicted and personalized for each user using one or more machine learning models. This thesis proposes a complete methodology of building and implementing such a system. As a proof of concept, an online shopping website has been built and further tests have been conducted which gave a remarkable accuracy of 84.09% when compared with the actual needs of the user. The working demonstration of the project along with its description is available online at http://sparshgupta.name/MSc/Project Keywords: adaptive web, machine learning, mouse movement, gaze point

The 2008-2009 Excavations at the SAC Locality, Reber-Rakival Lapita Site, Watom Island, Papua New Guinea.

Hallie Buckely, Peter Petchey, Richard Walter

The Reber-Rakival site on Watom Island is of particular significance, as it is the first place where what is now known as Lapita pottery was found, by a German missionary in 1909. It is also significant as a Lapita-era burial site, although there has been much debate about the exact relationship between the burials and the Lapita occupation. In 2008 and 2009 an Otago University/Otago Museum/Papua New Guinea National Museum expedition carried out new excavations at the SAC locality in Rakival Village, in order to increase the sample size of both burials and ceramics, and to address some of the ongoing debates. The expedition found more burials, Lapita ceramics and associated artefactual material, and while it confirmed the relationship between the burials and the Lapita occupation, it also found that previous excavations had not reached the base of the site, and evidence of human occuption was found up to 0.8m deeper than previously known. Based on this work, a refined stratigraphic sequence is presented, with 7 layers replacing the old 4 zone model that has been used to date. This paper presents the description and interpretation of the SAC locality at Watom, and provides a basis for other more specialist papers that are in preparation.

L'archeologia dello Scutum Herculis

2012 •

Sara Chiarini

2020 •

Steve Briand

This PhD dissertation is on the economics of aging. The three chapters study the underlying determinants of individuals decisions regarding retirement, health prevention and long-term care insurance demand. Chapter 1 explains the results of previous ex post public policy evaluations presenting relatively limited and heterogeneous effects of financial incentives, which should encourage individuals to postpone retirement. This article explores the role of another determinant of the retirement decision: time inconsistency. Using French survey data, the econometric analysis shows that time-inconsistent individuals are less likely to delay retirement to get a pension bonus (la surcote). Chapter 2 studies the causal effect of retirement on preventive and risky behaviors among couples. This article is the first to take into account coordination among partners and asymmetric spillover effects for this type of policy evaluation. Econometric results highlight heterogeneous effects depending o...
