How to Play
Mega Millions is played on Tuesdays and Fridays at 23:00 Eastern Time in the USA – see the FAQs on this page for the draw time in South Africa.
To play, you must pick five main numbers from 1 to 70 and one Mega Ball number from a separate set between 1 and 25. The game costs $2 per line. To win prizes, you need to match the numbers you pick to the winning numbers.
Playing from South Africa
You don’t have to live in the USA to play Mega Millions. You can also play the game online from around the world, including in South Africa, by following these steps:
- Select Mega Millions from the Buy Tickets page.
- Pick your numbers. You can either choose your own or go for a Quick Pick.
- Play as many boards as you like.
- Choose whether you want to enter a single draw or multiple draws.
- Select ‘Add To Cart’ and confirm your purchase.
- Pay for your entries.
The first time you play online you will have to set up an account, where your entries are kept secure until the draw has taken place. Your numbers are also checked automatically to help you find out if you are a winner.
Megaplier
The Megaplier is an optional extra which costs $1 per line and gives you the chance to increase prizes by up to five times their original value. The Megaplier is drawn just before the main game and will be one of the following: 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x. Whichever multiplier is selected will be applied to any prizes you win, apart from the jackpot. Some Megapliers are more likely to be drawn than others. The table below shows the odds of each one appearing:

The Megaplier is not available in California, due to the state’s rules about how lottery prizes must be calculated, and it may not be an option for online players playing from outside the USA.
Just the Jackpot
Just the Jackpot is a type of special offer that gives you two lines at a reduced cost of $3. However, you are only eligible for the jackpot so you must match all the numbers to win and you cannot claim any other prizes. Just the Jackpot can only be played in a few states and, like the Megaplier, may not be available to international players entering online.
Prizes and Odds of Winning
You must match all five main numbers and the Mega Ball to win the jackpot, which starts at $40 million (approximately R560 million) and rolls over when it is not won. However, there are also eight other ways to win in every draw, so you can win something for matching fewer numbers.

When Mega Millions launched with its first draw on 6 September 1996, it was known as The Big Game. It was later rebranded in 2002 and the Mega Ball came in to replace the previous ‘Big Money Ball’.

No, the jackpot rolls over every time it is not won and there is no cap in place so it can keep on climbing.
+ What is the biggest ever Mega Millions jackpot?
A player from Florida won $1.602 billion (approximately R30 billion) on 8 August 2023, setting a new record for Mega Millions. The jackpot was claimed by Saltines Holdings, LLC a few weeks later after the draw, and they chose the cash option of $794.2 million.
+ If I win the jackpot from outside the USA, will I receive the prize money?
Yes, you can win all the same prizes as someone who buys a ticket in the USA by using third-party lottery betting and concierge services. You will receive the money whether you win the jackpot or a smaller prize. Go to the FAQs page for more information about how it works.
+ Why can’t I see the option to play the Megaplier?
The Megaplier is only available to play if you buy a ticket in some states in the USA. If you cannot see this option when entering Mega Millions online, it is not possible to add it to your entry.
