Having the right mattress can drastically improve your quality of sleep. And several factors affect how well you snooze on a mattress, including support, firmness, and temperature.

Experts recommend getting a new mattress about every 8 years, or as close to it as possible. Most mattresses last about that long. However, a mattress that’s very high quality could give you a good night’s sleep for even longer.

After years of sleeping on a soft mattress, I gave the Serta Perfect Sleeper mattress a try, and it won me over. Keep reading for my in-depth review.

The Serta Perfect Sleeper mattress comes in several main types. I tested the innerspring mattress, but here’s a quick overview of all the different types. Each one is available in:

  • twin
  • twin XL
  • full
  • queen
  • king
  • California king

Innerspring

The Perfect Sleeper Innerspring Mattress is the most traditional mattress in the collection and is also the most customizable, meaning you choose which features matter the most to you.

Overall, the innerspring mattress focuses on pressure relief, aiming to alleviate aches and pains caused by pressure points. There are three different support levels, each with a different number of coils and targeted zones designed to support your lower back and hips.

You also choose from eight feels — from extra firm to plush, with or without a pillow top. Mattress height will vary depending on the firmness and pillow top options you select. On the firmer side, the mattress height range starts at 12 inches (in) high. With the plusher pillow top options, it can reach 15 in tall.

Hybrid

The Perfect Sleeper Hybrid Mattress combines an 850 coil density system with cooling memory foam layers that contour to your body. It’s available in firm, medium, and plush feels, with no option to add a pillow top. This mattress may be best suited for stomach and back sleepers.

Mattress-in-a-Box Foam

As its name suggests, this all-foam model arrives in a box and is made with three layers of gel memory foam that relieves pressure and provides a cool night’s sleep. The Perfect Sleeper Mattress-in-a-Box Foam also includes Serta’s foam core layer, which is considered durable and supportive for all sleeping positions.

The mattress height ranges from 10 to 12 in high, depending on your firmness level (medium or medium firm). Foam mattresses are best for sleepers who like soft support. Side sleepers often find foam mattresses suitable.

Mattress-in-a-Box Hybrid

For those who love gel memory foam but also appreciate extra support from coils, the Perfect Sleeper Mattress-in-a-Box Hybrid offers both. This mattress also arrives in a box, sits 11 to 12 in high, and provides support from an 825 coil system and two layers of gel memory foam. It’s available in a medium or plush feel and is 12 in high.

Since the Perfect Sleeper mattress has enough options available to fit every type of sleeper — whether you sleep on your back, side, or stomach — you’ll find a version of the mattress that works for you.

I specifically recommend the innerspring mattress I tested, with these criteria: medium feel, ultimate level, plush pillow top (also called Cobalt Calm).

Medium-firm mattresses may work best for those with lower back pain, but they can also make a good range of other sleepers happy, especially those who care about proper spine alignment and weight distribution.

And if you sleep hot, the Perfect Sleeper is a great fit. Each of the mattresses works to help keep your sleeping temperature balanced, with various cooling materials.

Before I get into the details, if you’re looking for a quick spoiler of my review, here it is: I’m glad I have this medium-feel innerspring mattress by Serta.

I’ve slept on soft mattresses my entire life. My philosophy until now has always been that the softer the bed, the cozier the sleep. However, the Serta Perfect Sleeper was a little different from what I’m used to.

Firmness

I tried the innerspring version of this mattress at its ultimate level, medium on the firmness scale, and topped with a plush, quilted pillow top.

Even with the pillow top, my first thoughts were, “Wow, this is firm!” This is thanks to my lifetime experience with extra soft mattresses, of course.

It turns out the extra support really makes a difference in sleep quality.

Sleeping position

I sleep in all different positions throughout the night, but I find that I experience less tossing and turning on this mattress. My sleep partner also noticed that their back pain wasn’t noticeable upon waking, which was not the case with the previous soft mattress. This makes sense since medium-firm mattresses are recommended for those with lower back pain.

The quilted pillow top is soft but doesn’t give a “sinking in” feeling like some softer mattresses. So you have a nice soft pillow top without sacrificing the medium-firm feel.

If you’re a person who prefers extremely firm mattresses and wonder if this line’s firm and extra-firm options will cut it, I believe it’s safe to say yes. That said, if you absolutely have to have a soft mattress (stomach sleepers, sleepers with lower weight, this means you) definitely opt for the plush or plush pillow-top versions of this mattress.

More about the mattress

Though the relaunch of this mattress is centered on offering this collection of mattresses at an affordable price, the mattress doesn’t feel budget-friendly — it feels high end. You can tell it’s well made from every angle.

The edges are noticeably durable, and while there’s some bounce, there isn’t too much. This is probably due to the coil system, which focuses on minimizing motion transfer. My previous mattress made it pretty obvious when my sleep partner was tossing or turning, but the motion transfer on this mattress is much less noticeable.

Hot sleepers can breathe a sigh of relief too, this mattress doesn’t trap heat like many do (especially my older mattress). While I can’t say it’s extra cold to the touch, I can say that I don’t wake up hot in the middle of the night, which makes a big difference.

Final thoughts

It took me a few sleeps to get used to my firmer mattress, but after that, I completely forgot about those softer days and am satisfied with the quality of this mattress, its level of support, low motion transfer, and generally cool temperature. I’m happy to say I expect to keep it around for its entire life expectancy of 10 years.

With the relaunch, the Serta Perfect Sleeper is offered at a more accessible price point.

Pricing ranges from $599 to $1,299 depending on the type, size, and upgrades that you choose. Pricing may also vary depending on whether you buy directly from Serta or from a third-party retailer.

Warranty, returns, and shipping

Serta offers a 120-day, in-home free trial, free shipping and delivery, and a 10-year limited warranty. The Perfect Sleeper is designed and built in the United States.

My experience with shipping was excellent. Serta uses a delivery partner called RXO Logistics. I chose my preferred delivery date online with RXO and received a phone call from the company about 20 minutes before the mattress arrived, so I had some time to prepare the space. The entire process was simple, fast, and efficient.

It’s worth noting that the company is not currently shipping to Alaska and Hawaii.

Overall, the Serta Perfect Sleeper gets good reviews online. Consumers say their mattress has a wonderful balance of firmness and support. They stay cool while sleeping, and the mattress is durable, making it a great investment for them.

According to most customers, the main drawback is that the mattress is delivered in its full shape, making it difficult to maneuver into the bedroom.

The Serta brand has been around for a while. The first Perfect Sleeper mattress was launched in 1931, 2 years before the Serta brand name was introduced. Despite their experience in the industry, however, Serta gets relatively low ratings online.

Serta isn’t accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and has an F rating on the site, with more than 20 complaints closed in just the past 12 months.

In early 2022, Serta worked with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to voluntarily recall about 800 of its Perfect Sleeper mattresses that were manufactured in summer 2021. The mattresses posed a fire hazard because they didn’t meet the mandatory federal flammability standard for mattresses.

Consumers who had been using the mattresses received a replacement free of charge. No incidents or injuries were reported in association with the recall.

You can purchase a Serta Perfect Sleeper mattress on the Serta website or from a variety of other retailers, including:

  • Amazon
  • Bed Bath & Beyond
  • Big Lots
  • Macy’s
  • Mattress Firm
  • Target
  • Walmart
  • Wayfair

The Serta Perfect Sleeper comes in four versions: an innerspring, hybrid, mattress-in-a-box hybrid, and mattress-in-a-box foam.

Those who prefer the support of a coil system may find that the innerspring is best for their needs, especially those with back pain. The hybrid option combines the feel of a gel memory foam mattress with the support of a coil system.

Each mattress is constructed with slightly different materials. You might prefer one version over another, depending on your body size and your sleeping position.

With the brand’s recent relaunch of the line, the mattresses are available at slightly lower costs, and you can select the features you prefer, like firmness levels, pillow top options, your preferred coil system, etc.

However, all mattresses are high quality choices.

According to online reviews, the Serta Perfect Sleeper will likely last for 8 to 10 years. The mattress comes with a 10-year limited warranty.

The firmness of the Perfect Sleeper depends on which of the selections you purchase. The innerspring version offers extra-firm, firm, and medium-firm options that you may find suitable for your preference.

With features like quilted pillow tops and cooling, contouring memory foam, these mattresses are unsuitable for flipping.

The Serta Perfect Sleeper Collection features an innerspring model, a hybrid model, and a couple of mattress-in-a-box options. The innerspring and hybrid models feature an 825- to 850 coil density system.

The company’s website states that you don’t necessarily need a box spring with your mattress, but having one can make a difference in a few key areas. For example, your warranty may require that you have a proper bed base.

Plus, using a box spring with your mattress can help improve your mattress’s shock absorption and airflow.

The Serta Perfect Sleeper is a well-known mattress for good reason. With contouring memory foam layers, temperature control, and good edge support, shoppers can choose from varying firmness levels and pillow top options.

Be aware that the mattress has been recalled as a fire hazard. However, overall, the Perfect Sleeper is a great fit to help you get a good night’s sleep.
