Springer enthusiasts, both field and conformation, dock tails for utilitarian function and to reinforce the breed's moderate, balanced outline, consistent with proper breed type as defined in the standard. Conformation, field, and performance English Springers are customarily and routinely docked in the United States.

Generally, a healthy, fully mature Springer will weigh 18-25 kg depending on its gender, with a life expectancy of 12-14 years when cared for accordingly.

Clumber Spaniel

While Springers and co*ckers have similar energy levels, co*cker Spaniels generally fare better when left alone for long periods of time. Springer Spaniels may suffer from separation anxiety so they are better suited to pet parents who can bring them along on all their adventures.

What age do Springer Spaniels slow down? ›

While they are still lively, many calm down a little as they enter adulthood, with those from the age of 3 usually displaying slightly less excitement. From around the age of 8, an English Springer Spaniel may begin to show slight behavioural changes, including having less energy or pace.

Most English Springer Spaniel puppies experience rapid growth until they're about 6 months old. However, they'll continue to fill out and mature until they are around 18-24 months. Expect the most significant growth spurts in the first year.

They're affectionate and just generally like people rather than becoming attached to one individual; while not overly cuddly, they like to stay in close proximity to their family. English Springer Spaniels tend to follow their pet parents around the home. They don't like being left alone for too long.

English Springer Spaniel Behavior

They're known to be a friendly breed, and they might bark to communicate readiness to play or to greet other dogs or humans. They're not known for excessive barking, but like other dogs, that can develop if their exercise or socialization needs are not met.

The Working Type

The English Springer Spaniel field-bred dogs tend to have shorter coats than show-bred dogs, ears are also less pendulous. The breed standard calls for a height of approx. 20.8 cms (20 inches) to the shoulder, however working dogs tend to be shorter and wiry in build.

They're Not a Variant of the English Springer Spaniel

In fact, the Welsh Springer Spaniel and English Springer Spaniel are two different breeds. The Welshie's head is unique, with a slightly domed skull and a straight muzzle, and doesn't look like the head of other spaniels.

Springadors tend to be larger than an English Springer Spaniel but quite a bit smaller than a Labrador Retriever. However some dogs look more like a Lab and have the same shaped heads and coats whereas other dogs may look more like the Springer Spaniel and have longer coats.
